Workmen's Circle
Founded Early 20th century · Workmen's Circle (Arbeter Ring)
299 Stillson Road, Waterbury, CTAbout This Cemetery
The Workmen's Circle Cemetery was established by the Waterbury branch of the Workmen's Circle (Arbeter Ring — אַרבעטער רינג), one of the most influential Jewish labor and cultural organizations in American history. Founded in 1900, the Workmen's Circle championed Yiddish language and culture, labor rights, and secular Jewish identity. Its members were often socialists, trade unionists, and progressive intellectuals who saw Jewish identity as inseparable from the struggle for social justice. The cemetery's inclusive burial policies — permitting cremated remains and non-Jewish spouses — reflect the organization's secular, humanistic values. The Workmen's Circle remains active today, and this cemetery stands as a lasting monument to the labor movement's deep roots in American Jewish life.
