About This Cemetery

Star Lodge Cemetery was established by the Star Lodge, a Jewish chapter of a fraternal benefit society. Fraternal lodges were an important part of immigrant Jewish life in America, providing life insurance, sick benefits, and a sense of brotherhood to members who were navigating a new country. The Star Lodge cemetery reflects the blend of American fraternal culture and Jewish communal tradition that characterized many immigrant organizations of the era. The cemetery permits cremated remains, reflecting a somewhat more flexible approach to burial practices, while maintaining the Jewish character of the grounds by restricting burial to Jewish members and their families.
