About This Cemetery

Sharis Israel Cemetery is among the most traditionally observant of the JCAGW cemeteries. It follows strict Orthodox burial practices, including taharah — the ritual washing and preparation of the body — and prohibits the use of a mechanical lowering device at graveside, in keeping with the tradition that the deceased should be lowered into the earth by hand as an act of personal honor and respect. The name Sharis Israel (שְׁאֵרִית יִשְׂרָאֵל) means "the remnant of Israel," a phrase with deep resonance in Jewish history and liturgy. The cemetery reflects the commitment of its founding congregation to preserving traditional Jewish burial customs in the New World.
