Melchi Zedek Cemetery

About This Cemetery

Melchi Zedek is the oldest of the nine cemeteries managed by JCAGW, founded in 1879. It holds the oldest known grave in the JCAGW portfolio, dating to that same year — a remarkable record of Waterbury's earliest Jewish settlers. The name Melchi Zedek (מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק) is a Hebrew name meaning "my king is righteousness," drawn from the biblical figure of Melchizedek, the priest-king of Salem. The cemetery's relatively inclusive burial policies — permitting cremated remains and non-Jewish spouses — reflect a more progressive tradition that developed over its long history. As the oldest Jewish burial ground in the area, Melchi Zedek is of particular significance for genealogical research into Waterbury's Jewish families.
