About This Cemetery

Hebrew Benefit Cemetery was established by the Hebrew Benefit Society, a mutual aid organization that provided financial assistance, sick benefits, and burial services to its Jewish members. Mutual aid societies like the Hebrew Benefit Society were a cornerstone of immigrant Jewish life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, filling the gap left by the absence of a social safety net. The cemetery follows Orthodox burial traditions, including taharah — the ritual preparation of the deceased — honoring the religious commitments of its founding members. It stands as a testament to the spirit of communal solidarity that defined Waterbury's early Jewish community.
